Columbus, your newest diner has arrived: Jenny’s Diner! Jenny Dials opened the diner last week at North High Street and Beechwold Boulevard in Clintonville, near Mozart’s Cafe. She’s working with Crystal Peplau; the two of them have many years’ experience working at TeeJaye’s, Beechwold Diner, and Linworth Diner.
Jenny’s has all the markings of a classic American diner: long counter, tall booths, photos of mid-century American pop culture.
There’s a small waiting area at the front, although it gets a little crammed when it’s busy. It’ll be nice when the warmer months arrive and guests can hang outside on the sidewalk.
The menu covers all the diner classics, too: corned beef hash, pancakes, omelets, country fried steak, biscuits and gravy, French toast, eggs benedict.
I appreciated a few additions, like cornmeal pancakes, cream chipped beef (aka SOS), grilled salmon, a grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich, and interesting omelets like a reuben or a chili omelet.
We ordered a full spread for our breakfast!
The Classic Breakfast combines two eggs to order, a choice of meat, potatoes, and toast. I appreciate that they offer hash browns as well as home fries!
The Diner Smalls lets you combine a pancake, a slice of French toast, one strip of bacon, one sausage link or patty, and an egg cooked to order. Both the pancake and French toast were nicely done – all golden brown.
The eggs benedict features your standard combination of poached eggs and ham layered on a toasted English muffin with hollandaise. It was all nicely done. Kudos to them for pulling off properly poached eggs and hollandaise (maybe pre-made, but still flavorful) on a busy morning.
We tried a side of corned beef hash, too. We forgot to ask if it’s made in-house, although this looks pre-made. But the flavor was pretty good!
Good country fried steak, too! Crispy and tender, with a very peppery gravy. Comes with two eggs, potatoes, and toast.
One of us tried a half order of biscuits and gravy as well. The gravy isn’t super chunky, but it’s generously seasoned. Maybe they ran out of biscuits, but the biscuit we received looked more like a grilled dinner roll.
Jenny was kind enough to pose with some of her crew when we said hi!
Jenny’s Diner is open Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
